ABRSM Grade 1 Guitar Examination
As part of the School’s Music curriculum, early last year, Jon was introduced to guitar during music lesson. The guitar lessons in the school only lasted two terms and Jon was very interested to learn playing guitar in greater depth. He has requested to sign up with a professional music school. But due to his commitment in studies and go kart racing, we don’t think it is possible to squeeze out any extra time! However, after much persuasions, we were convinced that it is not such a bad idea as a form of relaxation. This will help him to unwind his stress from PSLE exams and his high energy demanding sports – go karting!
Jon started his first lesson in June 2010 with Cristofori Music School. His lesson is only once a week and half an hour each lesson. We didn’t want to put any pressure on him as we want him to enjoy music and treat it as a hobby. But after one year of practice and under the good guidance of his music teacher, Mr Ido, we were told Jon progressed very fast and is ready to take “The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) Grade 1 Guitar practical examination.
The examination took place on 26 July 2011. There were four stages to clear,
1) Jon was first required to play three songs of his choice:
– Ductia
– Valse
– The Dangers of poking holes in ice
2) Scales and arpeggios or unaccompanied traditional song
3) Sight-reading (and transposition) or quick study
4) Aural tests
Jon passed the examination with a score of 116/150. Advice from the examiner, “A clear pass. Well Done. Use Dynamics scales to add character to your pieces.”
We would like to thank Uncle Andy and Auntie Peiyi for their unconditional generosity to loan Jon their guitar for an unlimited of time.
