STEPPING STONE
Having lost his pole position early in the go-kart race, Jon Lee, 11, waited patiently for an opening at the newly opened Kartright Speedway in Jurong yesterday.
Then the Ngee Ann Primary School pupil saw a gap on lap 10 of 17, squeezed through it expertly and hung on to win the Cadet category (8-12) in the first round of the Nescafe Singapore Karting Championships.
“The Kartright track is a good start. It is not ideal, but it’s the best we have,” said SMSA president Tan Teng Lip, who believes that a permanent race track and annual championships will enable drivers to practise regularly, compete inlocal races and improve along the way. And, it is drivers like Jon who are set to benefit. The youngster, who aspires to drive for Formula One team McLaren, has travelled to Malaysia to compete in seven races since he began racing last year. His best finish was third place at the Sangari International Invitational Kart Prix 2009 in Malaysia.
