10-year-old’s quest to become a top driver fuelled after opening kart win
SINGAPORE – He’s only 10, but Jon Lee is already a speed demon worth keeping an eye on.
Fuelled by shrieking family members and friends, he burnt rubber under the scorching sun at the Kartright Speedway in Jurong yesterday to become the first Cadet winner – age 8-11 – in the opening round of the inaugural Nescafe National Karting Championships.
Jon upstaged hot favourite Daim Hishammuddin to clinch the 17-lap race in the closing stages to collect 20 points for first place. The national championship is a five-round serious and features four other age-group categories besides Cadet.
Understandably jubilant, Jon, who started karting at the age of seven, told MediaCorp after the race: ” My dream is to become a Formula 1 driver. My idol is Lewis Hamilton from McLaren and I want to work hard and drive like him one day.”
